Gerringong’s landscape has wonderful sandy beaches with crystal clear water and unique hilly landscape of the nearby countryside. It is the beautiful landscape that is often described as where the mountains meet the sea. It’s like nothing you have ever seen before.

WERRI BEACH

Gerringong is famous for its surfing culture, idyllic beaches, popular fishing holes and friendly village atmosphere. Werri Beach is 1.5km in length and located on a sweeping stretch of sand. It lays between two rocky headlands, with rock swimming pools at one end and a natural lagoon at the other.

Spend your days either lazing on the sand sun baking or building sand castles with the kids. Playing beach cricket or bodysurfing the shore breaks. Werri beach has it all. Surfing the many breaks, windsurfing, or kite surfing if the wind is right. Go scuba diving or snorkelling to see the abundance of marine life at the point on the southern end. Or simply watch the many pods of dolphins that surf our famous breaks. During the whale season you can see the migration of the whales heading north and returning with their babies. Many taking a breather in Werri Beach when heading south. Werri Beach is great for beach fishing with an abundance of snapper and whiting.

If you want to learn to surf you can book a lesson at the largest surf shop in the Southern hemisphere Natural Necessity. However Ātaahua provides boogie boards and a surfboard therefore there is no need to hire them.

Werri Beach is a patrolled beach in summer and school holidays. It plays host to professional surfing tournaments such as the Werri Slash, the Red Bull Junior Surf Masters and the NSW Open Surf Masters Titles.

BOAT HARBOUR AND RESERVE

Directly opposite Ātaahua is the Boat Harbour Reserve where you may see a wedding as many couples take advantage of the outstanding views and get married there. Enjoy a picnic, fly a kite or walk the coastal track south to Boat Harbour pass the whale-watching platform. The beach ocean pool at Boat Harbour is another great spot for swimming. It is located at the southern end of Werri Beach on the other side of the headland hence the ocean pool is a hidden gem. The park has BBQ facilities where you can either cook up a storm or relax in the sunshine admiring the view. Enjoy watching the fishing boats return from a successful day out. Whilst the fisherman prepare their catch see the Pelicans arrive for an easy feed.

VILLAGE

Gerringong Village is extremely peaceful and relaxing. Try some of the local cafés and restaurants that offer fresh local produce and great seafood. Roam the village looking in the many exceptional clothing boutiques and home wares shops. You may find something you can’t resist. Many of the local shops stock local produce. Every 3^rd Saturday of each month local markets are held and every 1^st Friday of each month the Town Hall show movies the locals love.

HISTORY OF GERRINGONG

If time allows the rich history of the town is also worth learning about on your Gerringong holiday. The Heritage Museum is worthwhile visiting. The most noteworthy is learning about the first flight from Australia to New Zealand across the Tasman Sea by Kingsford Smith from nearby Gerroa. Visit the many buildings depicting the town’s history. Pay a visit to the old fashioned farms that are still operating today. They give an insight of how dairy farming was the main source of the Gerringong economy.

The beautiful scenery can be admired on the many walks and trails that are in Gerringong. The Gerringong to Kiama walk along the headland is a must, even if you only have the time to do a little bit of it. Take advantage of the bikes that we provide at Ātaahua by riding around the village to get a real feel of the ambience of the town. Have a round of golf at the beautiful Gerringong golf course located on the coast with  breath taking views.  Take a moment to drive to some of the many award winning wineries where you can try a variety of local wines at the cellar doors. Either enjoy a long relaxing lunch or even just a cheese platter with a glass looking at the beautiful surrounding scenery.
